WHY LAZARUS LAUGHED : 105

The Essential Explanation...3
The Big Black Cloud

TWO: You say there is an imbalance between my Affectivity and my Cognition; what does that mean exactly?
ONE: Imbalance between your resolution of two sets of dualisms: between Knowledge-Ignorance and Love-Hate.

TWO: You mean I have some Pure Cognition, less Pure Affectivity?
ONE: You may well have: it is not uncommon over here.

TWO: So what?
ONE: All this minor affectivity: liking and disliking; all this major affectivity: loving and hating. Stop discriminating, see them as one whole, and then you'll feel them as Pure Affectivity.

TWO: I'll try. Anything else?
ONE: You can surrender.

TWO: How do? Surrender what, by what, to whom?
ONE: The notion of your precious pseudo-self. Some people do it to God. But it is only the surrendering itself that is relatively real. The French se rendre seems better.

TWO: How can I surrender myself? My precious pseudo-self notion has no suicidal tendencies that I have noticed.
ONE: Your precious pseudo-self notion is never the doer - you know that, there is no do-er, no deed, only a do-ing. How many times...?

TWO: Not so many as some other things, but I remember it nevertheless. Who tells us that?
ONE: All of them by implication, a few explicitly.

TWO: Puzzling all the same: no one to do it, no one to receive it.
ONE: I have said that your idea of a pseudo-self cannot do anything. Your reality does not act except by non-action. But, if you want to, you can surrender to Jumbo, to me, to God, or to this glass of wine: that is purely incidental. Do it: the doing is all that matters.

TWO: But something must do it, damn it all!
ONE: What could there be to do it? The illusion of a do-er is the big black cloud. When you have seen that doer and deed only exist as a doing, you will have arrived at a vital understanding.

TWO: In a flash of intuition?
ONE: There is no other way. Stop thinking; stop, I tell you! [he drops the glass with a crash].

TWO: I see it, I see it: there is only DOING! What else could there be? Ha-ha-ha! Is it not obvious?
ONE: As obvious as the moon when the big black cloud has passed.
